This review is per a request on the Go Review That Album thread by user Nomode "Blue Flowers" was perhaps one of my least liked songs from the Dr. Octagon album proper so I guess I never really got into this one despite buying it and playing the two sides either on radio or on a Sunday night somewhere in Kansai. Some of the DJ's in Japan when I was there around the time of release liked the Hype remix and it got a response as expected. Decent enough for the dancefloor but not impactful like the best of Ganja Kru / True Playaz. The vocal samples were overdone with a slightly twitchy snare on the DJ Hype mix. It seems to be one of those 90's "kill the sample" songs, a phenomenon that I noticed sometimes for jump up / jungle as well as house and breakbeat music in this time period. On top of that the bassline and breaks themselves seemed a bit too 1994 for 1996. The flip with a mix from Photek unsurprisingly is a bit more mysterious with the sax and thicker percussion. Importantly it lets most of the rap vocal spread out over the song. However, the scratching really does not add all that much and the drop is less impactful and there is little progression through the track from Mr. Parkes. Often the source material can restrict the remixer and even in a perfect situation where it is a great original tune the mix can miss out on the best aspects of the song. This is one of those cases for me.
