Don Ball Jr. collection - DB366 - Question on Marker Light Lens Colors
ROBERT HULTMAN #6178 All, Needing to glue the jewels in on some Athearn cast-metal SP-RI caboose marker lights on legs........... Were the lenses fixed or were they moveable to where different colors could be displayed from the "same barrel"? If the lenses were fixed, on which side of the light fixture was the red lens? Appreciate any help y'all can send my way........ I suppose Mr. Ball was bracketing his exposures. It shows RI caboose 17085 hooked up to “yard air” on a winter’s day. There’s no info associated with this image except that it was a 35mm slide. #6179 I don’t know. I’d look in the Rule Book for your era. The Rule Book would tell what colors ought to be displayed. Unfortunately, I don’t have any RI Rule Books, so I can’t look it up for you. The relevant UP rules of 1954 are attached for your reference. #6180 Hello Bob and All - Each 'can' had a fixed red lens and a fixed green lens. The cans were reversed one from the other. The can that showed red to the rear was lit up and the other was left dark. Seems like it would be a simple DCC circuitif you wanted working lights on a model. ROBERT HULTMAN #6182 Jeff & Philip, Thank you both for your replies. Philip's explanation helps, as does Jeff's information. With the "cans" mounted on the caboose roof, I have to assume the switch(es) controlling which can was lit up is inside the caboose interior. Now what I need to pin down is which color lens was on the viewer's left from the viewpoint of an approaching train towards the caboose with the "cans" on its roof.
