Why did Haunted Mansion get bad reviews? ›

Haunted Mansion is needlessly convoluted and feels its length but for a Disney theme park ride adaptation it's really impressive how ready this film is to have some genuinely moving and open conversations about grief and how painful it can be to move on.

Haunted Mansion's talented cast makes the movie a pleasant enough destination, although it's neither scary nor funny enough to wholeheartedly recommend. Haunted Mansion is a fun blend of horror and comedy with a great cast and a story that'll be extra entertaining for fans of the ride that inspired it.

Principal photography ran from October 4, 2021, to late February 2022 in New Orleans, Louisiana and Atlanta, Georgia. Production also occurred at Trilith Studios. The visual effects were handled by DNEG and Industrial Light & Magic.

“Haunted Mansion,” rated PG-13 for “some thematic elements and scary action,” is based on the Disneyland ride of the same name. The movie features a mother, played by Rosario Dawson, and her son, played by Chase Dillon, who move into a haunted home in Louisiana and learn they cannot leave.

Holding a 37% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the majority of criticism for Haunted Mansion was aimed towards the movie's balance of horror and comedy, with many reviewers feeling it didn't go far enough in either direction to fully recommend the movie.

The underwhelming start might be attributed to the lack of interest in and popularity of Haunted Mansion. The movie earned mixed reviews for being a fun ride and an improvement over the 2003 version. Still, its lack of intensity and urgency made it difficult to compete with other summer blockbusters.

As such, Haunted Mansion is a fine film. At least, that's what my inner film critic would say… Haunted Mansion is also one of the few movies out there that has me split between film appreciation and my Christian beliefs. As a Christian, I actually cannot recommend this film.

Frightening & Intense Scenes (7)

Humour tones down the horror, but has some sequences and jump scares. The Hatbox Ghost may be scary to some people.

According to Common Sense Media, “Haunted Mansion” is rated PG-13 for violence, frightening scenes, supernatural elements such as dark magic and the appearance of a Ouija board and some alcohol use. The site recommends the movie for kids 11 years old and older.

"Haunted Mansion" succeeds by being a thrill ride from start to finish, utilizing aspects of the ride naturally while telling a story of rejection, grief, and acceptance, even if it's a little long and predictable.

Despite repeating some names and gags from Disney's shorter (and superior) “The Haunted Mansion,” the new film is neither a sequel nor a true retread of that 2003 movie, and viewers should feel no need to preface their viewing with the original.

The Haunted Mansion is dark and contains some mildly frightening scenes, but there is no gore. The ghostly residents are friendly and the ride is slow-moving.

Enjoy rides and attractions as a family.

Anyone can enjoy attractions that do not have height requirements. Your toddler can ride in a carrier on attractions that don't have lap bars or seatbelts, and they can sit on your lap for rides like Peter Pans Flight, Haunted Mansion, and Little Mermaid, to name a few.

Earning the movie back some non-woke points, one of its key plot devices is dependent on the implicitly understood and explicitly stated importance of having a stable and loving father in the home.

it was funny a great family movie to watch with the kids. It's first act was mostly dialogue and didn't really make an effort to establish strong enough emotional motivation, display enough ghostly mischief, or meaningful character interactions. The second act feels like filler.
