Should I put a tarp on the floor of my storage unit? ›

We recommend putting something on the floor such as plastic, a tarp, or wood pallets.

Line the floor of your storage space with plastic sheeting as a barrier against pests and moisture. Loosely cover your furniture with cloth, blankets, or loose plastic sheeting.

Put Heavy Items on Bottom

If you do stack boxes in your storage unit, put the heaviest items on the bottom. You don't want to risk them crushing other belongings over time. Use sturdier storage containers, like trunks or plastic storage bins, to store items at the bottom of a stack.

Adding storage shelves to your unit allows more floor space for other items, and even space to walk around in your unit for easier access. The best types of shelves you will want to look for are ones that are easy enough to carry, but still sturdy enough to hold your items.

Furniture items that a 10'x10' storage unit can accommodate

These items may fit nicely into a 10'x10′ storage unit: Dining room table and chairs. Sofa (most are less than 10 feet long, but avoid storing them on their side) Entertainment center.

A 10x10 unit is a good size for the stuff found in two bedrooms, an entire family room or a modest one- or two-bedroom apartment. A few large appliances and pieces of large furniture can easily be stored in a 10x10 storage unit as well as mattress sets, desks, couches, dining room sets and multiple boxes.

One more way to damp-proof your storage space is to install a vapor barrier, a polyethylene plastic or foil that is placed on the warm side of the storage wall in order to block outdoor moisture. This flexible membrane should also be installed beneath the floor to prevent moisture from the ground to seep inside.

Use Natural Pest Control Methods

Scents such as lavender, cloves, cayenne, and peppermint are repulsive to bugs and mice. Apply a few drops of these essential oils to cotton balls and place them around the unit. Cedar blocks also emit a scent that pests dislike and can be used in conjunction with the cotton balls.
